What is Fortified Roofing and Why Does It Matter?
Fortified Roofing Overview
FORTIFIED Roofing is a voluntary construction standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to enhance a home’s resilience against severe weather, including high winds, hail, hurricanes, and thunderstorms. Based on decades of research and full-scale testing, FORTIFIED standards exceed typical building codes, focusing on strengthening the roof to prevent damage and water intrusion. Key features include:
- Sealed Roof Deck: Prevents water entry if shingles or coverings are damaged, reducing water damage by up to 95%.
- Enhanced Attachment: Uses ring-shank nails in a tighter pattern to double the roof’s wind resistance.
- Stronger Edge Systems: Wider drip edges and fully adhered starter strips secure roof edges against wind uplift.
- Hail Supplement: In hail-prone areas like North Texas, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles and upgraded skylights are recommended.
- Three Certification Levels: FORTIFIED Roof (focuses on the roof), Silver (includes roof plus walls), and Gold (full structural enhancements).
- Certification Process: Requires a certified contractor to install the roof per FORTIFIED standards, verified by an independent FORTIFIED Evaluator. Documentation is reviewed by IBHS, and a designation certificate is issued, valid for 5 years.
- Benefits: Homeowners may qualify for insurance discounts, grants, or tax incentives in states like Texas, though tax deductions are not standardized. FORTIFIED roofs reduce repair costs and improve home resilience.
DT Roofing’s FORTIFIED Certification in North Texas
DT Roofing is one of the few roofing companies in North Texas certified as a FORTIFIED Roofing Contractor by IBHS. This certification signifies their expertise in installing storm-resistant roofs that meet rigorous FORTIFIED standards, setting them apart in a competitive market.
- Certification Requirements: To become FORTIFIED certified, DT Roofing met stringent IBHS criteria, including:
- Completing the FORTIFIED Wise™ Roofing Contractor Training Course and passing an exam with at least an 85% score.
- Providing proof of an approved roofing certification (e.g., GAF or Owens Corning), a valid contractor or business license, 7 years of business experience, $1,000,000 in general liability insurance, and valid workers’ compensation coverage.
- Signing the FORTIFIED Service Provider Agreement and maintaining up-to-date credentials in the FORTIFIED Provider Portal.
- Regional Significance: North Texas is prone to hail and high winds, making FORTIFIED roofs particularly valuable. DT Roofing’s certification ensures they can deliver roofs tailored for these conditions, such as those with high wind and hail designations.
- Market Advantage: As one of the few certified providers in the region, DT Roofing stands out for offering scientifically proven, resilient roofing solutions. Their inclusion in the FORTIFIED Directory enhances visibility to homeowners seeking storm-ready roofs.
- Customer Benefits: By choosing DT Roofing, homeowners gain access to roofs that reduce storm damage risk, potentially lower insurance premiums, and increase property value. The certification process ensures quality through third-party verification by FORTIFIED Evaluators.
While other North Texas contractors may install FORTIFIED roofs, only certified providers like DT Roofing have undergone IBHS’s rigorous training and vetting, ensuring consistent adherence to standards. Homeowners can verify DT Roofing’s certification via the FORTIFIED Provider Directory on fortifiedhome.org.
